Any time a professional baseball player has the opportunity to play in front of his family, it's a special occasion. For the family of Houston Astros prospect Conrad Gregor, though, it was even more special than any of them could have imagined. During Saturday night's Midwest League game in Davenport, Iowa. Gregor hit his first home run of the season, and the man who caught the ball cleanly and impressively behind the right field wall just happened to be his own father, Marty Gregor.
It turns out Gregor's parents traveled from Carmel, Indiana to watch their son play for the Quad City River Bandits over the Memorial Day weekend. Just being there to see his first home run of the season would have been cool enough, but they were actually standing in just the right place to not only cheer him on, but catch the baseball.
"He may have to watch every game from out there," Gregor joked.
The home run came off Kernels starter Ethan Mildren with runners on first and second and one out in the sixth inning. A nearby fan leaped and reached to catch the ball, but Marty turned and appeared to make a basket catch that prevented it from clearing a guardrail. As the younger Gregor ran the bases, the elder stood in front of the Mississippi River, his arms raised, the ball in his right hand.
It's pretty amazing and the catch itself was pretty good. Marty Gregor went back and over-the-shoulder to make the grab, and did so without a glove. He showed off some good hands, which even Gregor's teammates acknowledged after he finished rounding the bases.
"It's a little unbelievable, but I'm glad my parents were here to see it," Gregor told the newspaper, "and when I got back to the dugout, I heard he made a pretty good catch."
It goes without saying, that's one home run that was not thrown back on the field of play. Instead, it's going to find a nice spot in the Gregor residence as one of the absolute coolest baseball souvenirs/mementos imaginable.
And the icing on the cake? Gregor's three-run blast provided the difference in the game, as the River Bandits knocked off the Kernels 5-2.
Have a night, Gregor family!
